My interest in the arts and crafts was kindled at an early age
as I watched my "folk artist" grandfather carve wood
into amazing shapes. Even though he was blind, he was able to
see the object in his mind s eye, then carve it until it "felt
right."
I was inspired to make things using all sorts of materials
including: wire, wood, paper, glue, fabric, glitter, shells
and other found items. Art classes were my
favorite. I developed an interest in contrast and pattern in
my artwork. After graduating from college I enjoyed working as
a graphic designer for 21 years.
Beginning in 1999 I studied lampworking under Rebecca Downing,
Sage and Tom Holland, and Al Janelle. Melting the
colorful transparent glass over a hot flame captivated my
imagination. At once I felt I had found my home in art.
Though my new medium required expensive equipment and complete
concentration in a hot, dangerous work environment, I was
compelled to learn the challenge of melting, shaping, then
cooling the glass slightly at the exact moment to freeze the
shape created. It s always exciting to look into the kiln the
next morning to see what was made the day before.
I hope people find that the unique shapes and designs of my
work reflect and celebrate some part of their own uniqueness.
